WELCOME 2008 NEW MEMBER -- Heather Savarimuthu, Morganton, NC, sponsored by Josh Smith.

NOTE OF THANKS --Thanks to Maggie Simmons Hughes for a nice note to the Knobbies and her renewal form. She noted how much she enjoyed the newsletters and she was gearing up to join us for breakfast in 2008. She also made a $25.00 contribution to the club to help with the newsletter postage.

MESSAGE FROM GENE – Here it is 64 degrees, Sunday afternoon and I am just wishing I was out riding the RT, or for that matter the old R60!! Unfortunately, other obligations are keeping me semi indoors today. Ever have days like that? I’m sure if you’re a rider, it has happened. So, you sit and do a little daydreaming?

Well, I have been daydreaming a lot about my big motorcycling goal. A lot of our seasoned riders have accomplished this, but my goal when I bought that Gold Wing way back when, was to see all 48 contiguous states. I haven’t set my sights on Alaska, but if I can just see those lower 48, that will be a huge deal to me.

I’m really hoping I can get to my daydream this year. I have probably mentioned to a lot of you that I hope I can somehow get my RT out to the Las Vegas area, then ride up through California, Washington and Oregon, or is that California, Oregon and THEN Washington? Whatever; but if everything holds together, then on over to the BMWMOA rally in mid July! It should be a heck of a trip, if I can pull it off. I would really like to set ‘er down for a couple days in several locations, and really stop at the MOA rally (Gillette, Wyoming), then homeward bound.

So, I would like to encourage as many in our club as possible to make the MOA rally AND please do me a favor if any of you think you can make the trip. Let me know beforehand so I can account for all our Knobbies. IF, a big IF, we (Patsy and I) make it. Last year rules were changed for the awards ceremony in that we had to have either your MOA number or your entrance number or both. By the time I had tried to round all the Knobbies up, too late. (I’ve always said, like herding cats.) Then I have promised myself to make sure I attend the Presidents meeting and let it be known our Knobbies are alive and well, and well, getting older!

Now speaking of getting older, I’d like to congratulate PO on his Knobbiest award our last meeting. Quite honestly, I think he is probably the most improved rider AND is a great Knobbie! So congrats PO!

Also glad to hear others in the Club are doing well, as in Bobby, whoops!! Excuse me? Barbara Smith! Also nice to hear Norm seems to be getting better and better. Sam Aycock is even up and almost running, so let’s hope we’re all better for our first good ride. Sam and Pam Chester are out kicking too if I heard right!

Now, what I’m leading up to, if any of our club members knows of any aspiring young riders, encourage them to hook up with our “classic” riders. Aw, heck, let’s face it, we are greying out in our club, so anybody under 40 is a young pup and we should do all we can to make them feel welcome. I firmly believe if we can get a few younger members, they would enjoy some of our camp outs and maybe enjoy the longer trips we have made. I for one have so enjoyed touring, my only regret is I wish I had started much earlier, but, live and learn, right?! I would just encourage younger riders not to do the crotch rocket thing, but lay back and start learning to enjoy the scenery and camaraderie. I was encouraged to see the MOA really making an effort to bring in younger riders at the last national. So, let’s see if we can get any of these younger folk to represent us.

Well, now back to daydreaming!!!!!!!!!!

CHRISTMAS PARTY – submitted by Crystal Gibson. The annual Knob Mountain Motorcycle Chapter Christmas party was held at Little Sienna Restaurant in Marion, NC on Sunday December 2, 2007. IT was wonderful to see everyone again. 75 club members were present. As always, the food was excellent and I heard comments such as “I am stuffed, I ate too much and it was delicious.”

Since the acting president and wife had another engagement, (like what is more important than the Knobbies—I guess we can forgive them since their child decided to plan to get married the same weekend—I know that it was a hard choice to make—empty nest or Knobbies). Dave Kiziah, Vice President, promptly took the reigns and welcomed everyone with some opening remarks and then blessed the wonderful meal.

With everyone with a full stomach the 50/50 drawing took place. The total raised was $270 and Harold “Vern” Poteet was the winner, pocketing $135. We then had a moment of silence for those that were no longer with us.

Shorty recognized that his daughter, Rachel Green, would graduate on December 15 from WCU and all Knobbies were invited to the graduation. I hope that there was a big turn out. I was in Mexico at the time and could not attend.

The Knobbies were treated to a slide show that Dana and Robert Stratton put together. The pictures were taken by PO Wilson during the year. A big thank you goes out to PO, Dana and Robert. The show was excellent. We had a few laughs, especially the one that started the show, PO eating a burger from Highway 11 Grill.

Danny Wilson gave a brief talk about the Sunday rides from Timberwood. Sharon Wilson had been taking the time to keep track of the mileage on the Sunday rides. This came to a surprising 8800 miles. Danny stated that there were between 8 to 33 riders that went. The longest ride was around 300 miles and the shortest was 100. (Me only on the warm days).

During the year Knobbies gracious enough to open up their home for fellowship and friendship were
Laura and Sam, along with Betty and Earl. Thank you for your cordial hospitality.

The Naughty Santa Game began and some antics of sneakiness were prevalent. I did notice that our friend “The Toad” did make it back this year and noticed that in the box he had a few friends to accompany him. I hope this year’s recipient gives him a good home.

We all waddled down the stairs of the restaurant with smiles on our faces and a full belly. The fellowship was great as always.

ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING – submitted by Crystal Gibson. The annual business meeting of the Knob Mountain Motorcycle Chapter was held Sunday, January 20, 2008 at Timberwood Restaurant in Morganton, NC. The meeting was preceded with a buffet breakfast.

Patsy Smith passed out copies of the member roster. She asked that all members check and verify the information. Her computer had decided it was time to come to an end and she wanted to recheck the information she had for club members. She also reiterated that if anyone had not turned in their membership renewal form for two years, those members would not be sent a newsletter.

Gene Smith, President, brought the meeting to order and started the meeting by thanking all of those that were able to attend. A moment of silence was given for Lamar Strickland, our dear Knobbie friend that had been taken from us suddenly late last year.

Gene also recognized some of the members that had been “down and out” as he put it:
 Bobbi Smith made it to the meeting after having knee replacement less than a week ago.
 Tonya Brumsfield has a knee brace on and all I caught was that it was Burt’s fault—jokingly that is.
 Terry Murray was on crutches due to broken cartilage in his knee.
 Sam Aycock was not able to attend because of collar bone surgery.
 Haskell Shealy, an update from Maynard, stated he was hard headed as ever and he is improving.

A big thank you went out to Sharon Wilson and Patsy Smith for doing such a fine job on the newsletter and to Daryl Carswell for being the webmaster of knobbies.org. Daryl has even enrolled in classes to improve the website. A “hats off” to these fine dedicated people for all their hard work.

The Christmas party minutes were read by Crystal Gibson. Many thanks went to PO Wilson for all the pictures he had taken on various rides. Last year’s business meeting synopsis was read, just hitting the highlights.

Candy Richey gave a report on the “4 corners” ride. There were 45 people to sign up and 20 have completed the North Carolina 4 corner ride. Additional pins can be bought for $7.50 and stickers are still available. $500 has been donated to the Ride for Kids with the proceeds raised for through this ride.

The treasurer’s report was read by Sharon Wilson. The Knobbies have $1488.86. She gave a list of all the monies that had been distributed with the newsletter and postage being the largest expense.

Gene reflected on the RA rally that was held at the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC during June, 2007. The Knobbies have not yet received a portion of the profits from the RA but he stated an estimated $2500 to $3500 dollars may be received but is not definite. This was the largest and most expensive rally the RA had ever put on. Over $38,000 was paid to the Biltmore and more monetary disputes are to be settled. Gene recognized the volunteers and commended Mike McSwain for being the security chairman. I took it that he volunteered to help and then was thrown into the chair position. It was mentioned that a horse trailer was in the mix and tried to run over a few motorcyclists and was promptly escorted off the premises. Gary Clark mentioned that he has met other riders from all over that went to the rally on his numerous voyages and they all commented on how well the rally was. A big thanks to all that helped.

Gene Smith read off a list of all the members that joined this past year. It was impressive that so many people want to be a “Knobbie”.We must be a good group of people or at least we have someone fooled.

Penny Carswell sold hats, shirts and pins during the meeting. The new hats have a ‘cool max’ liner. This helps your head stay cool in the summer. She still has more items for sale if anyone is interested.

Sharon Wilson noted the name badges will now be made in Hickory. The previous company that made the badges had to be replaced.

The annual campouts was discussed and voted upon. The spring campout will be held at Kickstand Lodge in Stecoah, NC during May 16-18, 2008. The fall campout will be the weekend after Labor Day, September 6-8, 2008 at Blue Ridge Motorcycle campground in Cruso, NC. It was made known that reservations for cabins cannot be made until March 1, 2008. I will ask Daryl to send an email with the phone numbers of the campgrounds at a later time.

Bobbi Smith then recognized the Knobbiest Knobbie. She has had trouble in the past of obtaining the plaques for the past few years. She and Hal have found a place in Taylorsville to make the Knobbiest Knobbie plaques with the little “Knobbie Man” imprinted on the corner. The Knobbiest Knobbie plaques were distributed as follows:
2004 Hal Smith
2005 Haskell Shealy
2006 Sam Chester.
And the recipient for the 2007 Knobbiest Knobbie is PO Wilson. He was recognized as enjoying himself as being an asset to the Knobbie organization.

Gary Clark and Gene Smith then injected some funny events that have happened while PO has been around. For example, finding the best places to eat and riding abilities have really improved. Now he is the leader of the Sunday morning rides. And extraordinaire chef on picnic Sunday, bring on the hotdogs!! WAY TO GO PO!!!

Sharon Wilson then gave the mileage reports. There were 28 riders that turned in their mileage reports. These 28 riders have ridden 365,171 miles. The awards were as follows:
 2 up—Mike and Pan McSwain—20,819 miles. Mike rode a total 22,218 miles.
 Average Female rider—Candy Richey—11,180 miles
 Average Male Rider—Red Murray—12,500 miles
 High Female Rider—Sara Phillips—15, 291 miles
 High Male Rider—Gary Clark—34, 000. Second year in a row

Gene interjected the need for volunteers for the “Ride for Kids”. He also would like ideas for a fundraiser.

Patsy Smith informed the group that the newsletter will be sent out 4 times a year: February, May, August and November. Patsy and Sharon are always looking for articles and items of interest to put in the newsletter. Please send in your trip reports and interesting or not so interesting stories to them. And, don’t forget the swap shop.

Also, if anyone would like to have additional campouts or outings, they can be posted on the website, newsletter or email. Let’s make this a great year.

A few upcoming rallies were mentioned.
 MOA rally in Gillette, Wyoming, July 17-20
 RA Rally, June 19-22, Haughton, Michigan
 Daytona Bike Week, February 29- March 9. Walt and Lydia Sweat extends an invitation to visit them in Gainesville, FL
 Georgia Mountain Rally, May 2-4. Walt will make his famous Chili.

Danny Wilson informed that the “Unifour Trail Bike Club” has sent the Knobbies a certificate of appreciation for all the help that the Knobbies have given to the trail bike club in the past. Members were recognized that helped. The trail bike club puts on several events during the year: Brown Mountain Enduro (38th year), 2 Hare Scrambles, Bridge to Bridge Bicycle race.

The Christmas party was decided by a vote to be held at Little Sienna in Marion, NC on December 7, 2008. The same menu was selected to be served.

Patsy Smith then asked if anyone has any items for the swap shop to let her know.

A round of thanks was given to our excellent President, Gene Smith and the meeting was adjourned.

KNOBBIE SPRING CAMPOUT – May 16-18, 2008 at Kickstand Lodge in Stecoah, NC. Website address is kickstandlodge.com or you may call 828-479-6069 for information about the campground.

NORTH CAROLINA FOUR CORNERS TOUR UPDATE. As of January 20th, 45 have signed up and 20 completed – Haskell Shealy, Bradley & Candy Richey, Hal & Bobbie Smith, P.O. Wilson, Dave & Cheryl Kiziah, Daryl Carswell, Jerry Rector, Crystal Gibson, Truman Walton, Robert Taylor, Pan & Mike McSwain, Danny & Sharon Wilson, Frank Whinkler and Maynard & Tina Annas. Cost of the tour is $10.00 each per rider/co-rider. The Tour has made $500 in proceeds which was donated to the Ride for Kids in Sept 07.

MEMORIES OF MY FIRST BIKE – submitted by Hank Rowland. I have been a BMW rider for many years, but the first bike I ever had (in 1952) was a Harley of an uncertain age.

It had been abandoned behind someone's garage in Atlanta, and after some effort I got it to run, sorta. I would ride from Atlanta to Athens, GA, to check out the girls at the University of GA. (I was a Georgia Tech student and we had only 5 coeds at that time.)

Late one night I was plowing back to Atlanta when the bike quit. I was on a pretty remote stretch of the highway, but a little gas station was there so I pushed the bike in behind the building and thumbed a ride the rest of the way back to Tech.

Several weeks later I was hitch hiking back to Atlanta again and caught a ride in a pickup truck. The driver agreed to stop and pick up the Harley. We got back to the big city and my good Samaritan said he could store the bike at his business until I could come get it. Well, his business was chickens; and the place he had space for the bike was in a freezer locker.

When I was able to retrieve the old Harley it had about an inch of frost all over it. It thawed out OK. The battery I had borrowed let it crank and I rode it back to school.

I had several more "adventures" with that motorcycle before I left school. I gave it to a buddy and moved on. I am sure my buddy had as many happy memories of that bike as I do.

NEW BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY MOTORCYCLE TAG – submitted by David Whitener. The state has agreed to make a new tag for motorcycles featuring the Blue Ridge Parkway if they can get 300 orders. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is heading up the project. They are short over 100 orders for the tag project and placing an order does involve a donation to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I and several others placed a tag order in late 2007 but more orders are needed before the tags can be produced.

I’m very pleased that we live in Western NC where some of the most beautiful motorcycle rides in the U.S can be had within minutes of our homes. I give thanks for the parkway every time I get on it and ride across the mountains and see the views. We are truly blessed with these mountain roads.

So I’m happy to make the small donation to purchase one of these new tags to benefit the parkway. If you are interested, please call the Parkway Foundation in Winston-Salem, NC at 336-721-0260 to apply for the new tag. They cannot be bought at any of the local tag offices at this time.

NEW HELMET LAW – submitted by David Whitener. Boy, has the state of NC really screwed up with the new motorcycle helmet laws! Just read those single sheet “add in” with your application for new tags.

It appears that a new helmet law went into effect this year and there is no way you can meet the conditions of the new law. If a state officer or any other law enforcement stops 10 of us on a ride, probably all of us would be subject to a non-compliance fine. The new state laws states that the helmet must conform to Federal Law conditions. Well, there are no clear Federal laws that define which helmets conform and which do not. So, there is no way to enforce the new state laws.

I am really disgusted. I bought a new helmet last summer and it does not have the required seals and labels required by law to be able to use it. Last week, the Winston Salem Journal wrote an editorial exploring the flaws in this new state law and other newspapers within the state also published that same article. I hope everyone got a chance to read it. The above is what I understand about this new state helmet law.

FEDERAL STUDY NOTES CRASH FACTORS – What’s the most common cause of fatal accidents involving motorcycles and other vehicles? We’ve known for years that it’s a car driver violating the right of way of the motorcyclist – usually by turning left in front of an oncoming motorcycle or pulling out from a driveway or cross street. And a new federal study confirms that. According to an analysis released in September by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 35% of all fatal two-vehicle motorcycle crashes result from a car or truck driver violating the motorcyclist’s right of way. What that means is that the most important thing you can do to avoid accidents on the road is to watch out for other vehicles because it is clear they’re not watching out for us. But that’s not all. Here are some other significant factors NHTSA official found when they looked at the numbers:
 Riders were speeding in 27% of the crashes; 15% of the riders failed to stay in the proper lane or ran off the road; and another 5% were operating their bikes “in an erratic or reckless manner.”
 Only 13% of the motorcyclists used their brakes to try to avoid a crash; and only 6% tried to swerve.
 Almost a quarter of the riders who were killed didn’t have a motorcycle license.
 About 9% of the motorcyclists were under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.

So -- maintain control of your motorcycle, practice crash-avoidance maneuvers, get a license, don’t speed, and don’t drink and ride. AND, watch out for the other guy. American Motorcyclist , Jan 08 issue.

CHIT CHAT AND SUNDAY RIDES – by Sharon Wilson with help from P O Wilson

October 6- Gary Clark and Tom Hildebran road to a camp ground in Nebo for a night of camping.

October 7- Picnic Sunday and Danny lead us to Craggy Gardens State Park for a grilled hot dog -- Sara, Paul, Bobbi, PO and Sharon. PO always has the charcoal, his great cole slaw, and Sara usually brings some potato salad. Bobbi brings the buns and hot dogs, etc. Others of us bring chips, etc. PO was able to get his Golden Age Pass for the Federal and most of the state Parks.

October 14-We headed for Galax, Virginia to Maxados for lunch. Great ride with PO leading, Bobbi, Cheryl and Dave, Danny and I.

October 21- We headed to Bobby and Teresa Pearson in Caswell County up next to the state line. They were waiting on us with all kinds of food the greatest Hospitality around. For someone who grew up near Tarboro/Raleigh and the Carolina College Campus they are some of the Greatest People you will ever find. Teresa had been home from the hospital a few days and was able to stay outside with us all day. Thanks for having the Knobbies and the Tarheel Travelers to your Estate. Wish we could have stayed for the hayrides and some did it was fantastic. We road 365 miles and it was a beautiful day. Terry and Shelba along with Norman rode up in the car. Terry was having some knee problems. PO, Bobbi, Mike, Dave and Cheryl, Danny and Sharon represented the Knobbies. We got to see, Gene and Carol Knight, Becky G, Sandy O, Pat and George, Officer Bob, George Y, and so many others that we have enjoyed camping with at the Halloween Campout. Gene Knight was telling about his trip to Alaska and the adventures. When we returned to Myra’s to stuff in some ice cream Gary and Tom rolled in from Biktober Fest, Fl.

November 4 - PO lead us for our picnic to Damascus, VA. It was a nice day and we had David Lantz, Cheryl and Dave, Gary Clark, Dean Curfman, Bobbi, Danny and Sharon. Always good hot dogs off the grill and a dessert made by Cheryl.

Some time the week of November 18th Cheryl and Dave packed up their bike and headed to Key West, for Thanksgiving. They had a good ride, I saw the pictures. Hope Cheryl or Dave will write is a story. I know when they left NC heading South it was cold. The weather was nice in Florida but when they returned to NC it was cold again.

November 24 -Danny and I got up early and headed to Sunset Beach, NC to get the last of the NC Four Corners. It was a great ride, we got there before lunch and made our pictures and then the hunt was on for some good seafood. We were able to find a place in Calabash. I did a little Christmas shopping. We got back on our bikes for the ride home. It was a 593 mile day and great fun.

November 25- Up for breakfast with the Knobbies and another good day for riding.

December 2-The Knobbie Christmas Party which we had a great turn out and a lot of fun and fellowship. Danny put the pictures together that PO had made during the year. Dana and Robert got them on CD with music and we all enjoyed watching.

December 9-Dave and Cheryl lead 11 motorcycles up 181 to Pineola. PO, Bobbi, Danny and Sharon, Bobby Smith, Gary, Gene and Patsy, Paul and Sara, and Michael. At our first rest stop it started a light rain. Danny was having generator trouble and decided we needed to go back home while it would still run. Everyone except Dave and Cheryl, PO, Bobbi and Michael decided to go back because of the weather. The remaining four road up 221 Past Grandfather Mountain to the parkway North to Glendale Springs. Michael left us at Hwy 16. We had lunch at the restaurant at the intersection of 16 and 163. Then we rode hwy 16 south to Taylorsville and home. Encountered wet roads all day but never did get wet.

December 16- PO led Danny and Sharon, Bobbi, Dave to Gary’s Place in Sawmills where we picked up Gary. Riding through Granite Falls, Longview, down Ole Shelby Road, over to NC 18 to Polkville, onto Ellenboro to US 221 to Chesnee, SC to Gowanville and to the Junction Restaurant for Lunch. Then SC 14 to Landrum, 176 to Saluda, down Hobart’s Cove Road to Silver Creek road to Hwy 9 then NC 108 to Rutherfordton and Hwy 64 home. Rode a total of 225 miles.

December 23r- Rain, Danny was the only one riding and he rode to check on Penny, since she had surgery earlier in the week. Daryl and Penny met him at the door, but Danny was too wet to go inside.

December 30- It was cold but we had a good ride, Jerry Rector, PO, Dave, Danny and Sharon, Bobbi, Gary Clark road.

December 31-Penny and Daryl invited the Knobbies over to their home for a New Year’s Party. It was fun with all the great food, whistles, and noise makers as we rang in 2008 with friends.

January 1- Several got together to start the year off right and that is riding. PO lead the group over to Hwy 11 Grill for traditional lunch which is pork, black-eyed peas, cornbread, & greens. If you go away hungry it is your problem. The food is always good and lots of it.

January 6-It was a beautiful day and we had a great turn out for breakfast and to ride for out picnic. We had Dave and Cheryl, Bobbi, PO, Buddy and Diane Faw, Sara and Paul, Dean, David Lantz, Gary Clark, Betty & Earl, Gene

January 20 – Annual Meeting – Crystal has meeting minutes. We had a great turn out with a surprise visit from Walt and Lydia Sweat who came in from Florida.

The club meeting at Timberwood was well attended and well presented. It was very cold with a few icy spots on the roads. I was the only idiot to ride his cycle to the meeting. After breakfast, Danny decided he would ride a while also. There being, no other takers. (I’ll bet Bobbi would have come along but for her knee replacement 6 days prior.) Danny and I rode to Gastonia for lunch at Carolina Country BBQ. Then back to Myra’s. A total of about 130 miles for me. Submitted by P.O. Wilson.

January 27- PO, Dave and Cheryl, Sara and Paul, Danny and Sharon, Gary Lackey, Gary Clark Rode South on 18 to Fallston, 182 over to Polkville, New House Road to Ellenboro, 221A South through Henrietta and Cliffside to SC Hwy 11, at Cowpens Battle Ground. From there we went west through Chesnee and Campobello to the Junction Restaurant at the Intersection of SC 11 and SC 14. After lunch we went North to Landrum and US 176. Then 176 to Tryon and on to Saluda. From Saluda down Holbert Cove Road to Silver Creek Road and over to NC 9. We saw lots of snow but luckily no slick spots on the road. From #9 we rode 108 over to Rutherford where Gary Lackey cut across country to Denver. From Rutherfordton up US64 to Morganton and back roads to NC114 and on to Myra’s. Approx. 190 Miles.
